Fight the Phish!
Phishing and spear phishing are threats to cybersecurity. Jovian Concepts reminds you #BeCyberSmart by keeping an eye out for these types of scams.
Phishing scams usually involve fraudulent emails sent from sources that seem reputable. The source may use a false story and graphics to fool the victim into revealing personal information either directly or with enough detail that the scammer can then guess passwords, security questions, etc.
Some examples of stories used in phishing scams are:
noticing suspicious activity or log in attempts
claiming their is a problem with your account
providing fake invoices from popular vendors
offering COVID information or stimulus funds
Spear phishing scams go a step further by imitating a trusted sender in order to convince the victim to reveal personal information. These sophisticated attempts may include spoofed email address or copied email signature images.
"Fight the Phish" and protect your data with these tips from our Jovian Concepts Technical Director:
Double check the sender's address of any suspicious email. When in doubt, call or send a separate email to person the sender is claiming to be.
Keep antivirus software and OS up to date.
Use effective passwords.
Lock your laptop and phone when not in use.
Install apps only from trusted sources.
Consider the risks when following social media trends such as quizzes.
