Reflecting on Core Values: Professionalism

At Jovian Concepts, our Core Values speak to what others seek in Jovian Concepts and what our employees seek in each other, in company leadership, and in themselves. Professionalism is one of our five Core Values: Professionalism, Loyalty, Balance, Cohesiveness, and Personal Growth.

How do we know Professionalism is a Core Value?

When asked what they value most about Jovian Concepts, Professionalism is a clear stand-out in our employees’ answers. In recent small group discussions, the majority of responses specified the word ‘professionalism’ as a valued part of Jovian Concepts. Similar words that appear in employees’ discussions and writings on the topic include integrity, maturity, trusted, leaders, competent, and commitment.

A Jovian Concepts employee is “trustworthy, competent, direct, a self-starter, and a constant professional.”

Jovian Concepts employees bring to the customer “a focus on loyalty, integrity, and professionalism.”

Our “personal and professional excellence is fostered by a strong Jovian family with commitment to continuing growth.”

To be considered a Core Value, the value not only needs to be present in our current discussions about our culture, but there must be evidence that the value has been present since Jovian Concepts started. When our employees were creating the Mission Statement of Jovian Concepts several years ago, the brainstorming session brought up words such as “professional”, “leaders”, and “maturity”. The attitude of what it means to be a Jovian Concepts employee remains focused on Professionalism as a key ingredient.

What does Professionalism look like?

President and CEO, Richard Scheper, says of this Core Value, “Professionalism is obvious when we are with our customers, but even in a safe zone such as a retreat or online chat, we treat fellow employees with respect. We take each other seriously as professionals.”

In our company structure and traditions, Professionalism is seen in our dedication to professional growth through leadership retreats for Program Leads, the Board of Directors, and Section Managers. Assistance for higher education and certification programs is another way we encourage the training that supports Professionalism. Within the structure of our company, sections are kept small to facilitate communication and shared ideas, and leaders are encouraged to meet often, fostering the creative problem solving that leads to a strong professional presence in the workplace.
